Subject: Stop the Abuse! Horses in need and equine events 7 Feb NE edition

Hi everyone,

Hope you enjoyed your day.  There is some great information on the list tonight (especially a note from John Holland about the Americans Against Horse Slaughter gala...wish I could afford a trip to Washington!) and an update on the horses rescued from the Iowa sale.

So....here is the list.  :o)

Horses in need:

1.  I know this one is a little farther out, but maybe you all know someone in that area that can help.

Subject: Can you save Yasu from slaughter? She is in Washington State slated for Transport TOMORROW fEB. 8

Hi- I did a web search for equine rescue groups AFTER seeing a Tennessee Walking Horse mare posted on the Walkers for Sale website Wednesday, Feb. 6 by www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org.

I contacted this group about Yasu- the 20 year old walking horse that is in a feed lot and was told she was awaiting transportation TOMORROW - Feb. 8 - to a slaughter house in either Canada or Mexico.

I am a school teacher in Louisiana. I do not have the $550 it will take to buy this mare away from the killers. I will not have funds available until March 1--payday.

CBER is trying to find someone who will come forward to pay for the mare with the understanding that I will pay them back, either in a lump sum, or monthly. I am not trying to adopt this horse myself, am just trying to find a way to have her bought out of the feed lot and donated to a horse rescue or placement agency.

I have decided to contact the horse rescue groups that are listed for Washington state myself as well to plead for this mare's life.

If your group can come forward with the $550 needed to buy her, please contact me via a response to this email, phone, or contact Columbia Basin Equine Rescue and let them know you are willing to enter into a contract with me for me to pay you back.

I will be willing to pay you or any group back the $550 it takes to buy Yasu, plus $25 per month towards feed until she is adopted by someone you all feel will give her a good home.

All I ask is that you provide proof that Yasu has been bought from the feed lot and placed in a foster home or rescue.  Of course, I would also like to be notified and given the name of the person who eventually adopts her permanently up there in Washington State.

I do not have the resources to buy her and have her transported down to Louisiana.  It is not important to me that I end up owning her. It is important that I know she was saved from slaughter and placed in a loving home. My late husband and I used to raise Tennessee Walking Horses.

Thank you for any help you can give to Yasu, a most deserving mare.

Sincerely,

Marcia Willis

Horses for adoption:

1.  BLM to Offer More Than 70 Horses at Ohio Sale

February 06 2008 Article # 11288

The Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States (BLM-ES) on Feb. 16 will offer approximately 70 wild horses ranging from yearlings to 5-year-olds, and possibly a few burros, for adoption at the Cooper Arena at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

"There will be some exceptional horses from the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming and you can adopt one for a minimal adoption fee," said Karen Malloy, Wild Horse and Burro Program Manager for BLM-ES.

Approved adopters who pay the full fee for a horse will have the option select a second horse for a $25 fee.

The animals will arrive on Feb. 15, with viewing hours on Friday between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The adoption will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, beginning with a competitive bid. Animals not adopted on Saturday morning will be offered for a flat fee on a first-come basis Saturday afternoon and Sunday, Feb. 17.

Wild horses that have been gentled are used for dressage, trail riding, western events, and other disciplines. They are noted for their endurance, sure-footedness, and intelligence. Burros are companion animals and are sometimes used by farmers for predator control.

All animals available for adoption have been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, dewormed, and blood-tested. Since the Adopt-A-Wild Horse & Burro Program began in 1973, more than 200,000 animals have been adopted.

Prospective adopters must have sturdy corrals that are 20' x 20' (or larger), at least 6 feet high for an adult horse and at least 5 feet high for burros and horses younger than 18 months, and have a shelter directly attached to the corral. Adopters must provide a stock-type, step up trailer (ramps or split two-horse type trailers are not allowed). The BLM staff will sort, halter, and load animals onto the adopters' trailers.

"While the adoption process is simple and straightforward, anyone considering adoption of a wild horse or burro should remember that the animals are wild and require gentling and training," Malloy said.

Applications to adopt will be reviewed starting on Friday, and can be submitted until Sunday morning. For more information, call 866/4MUSTANGS, or visit the BLM Web site at www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov.

Readers are cautioned to seek the advice of a qualified veterinarian
before proceeding with any diagnosis, treatment, or therapy.

Subject: Fw: Iowa Rescue update 2/7

Hello Everyone -

First of all, thank you so much for your generous pledges! Expenses have
only just begun on this project, so please get your checks to Tom Flaherty,
our treasurer as soon as you can. And it is never too late to pledge and
donate!

'Our' horses who are temporarily in Iowa, and the rescue facility in Kansas,
have both been bombarded with snow this week. The horses have plenty of
food and water and a dry place to sleep. We still have not had them sorted
out for us, and have no idea of age or sex, except for sketchy details about
an older mare with an eye problem, 3 young mares who may be pregnant, and
there has been reference to at least one stallion among them.

And then there is "Perfect Ten", the draft cross colt pulled from the killer
pen for $10 and now, apparently bonded to the tiniest mini, a little
snowball whose sex we still don't know. I have a feeling he will be coming
home to the northeast with his little buddies. :)

I was hoping to have more details for you before I wrote, but I know how
anxious many of you have been for news, so now you know as much as I do.
Both rescue facilities are incredibly busy dealing with the horses in their
care, the weather, and, I understand, another large rescue operation. I'm
sure we will get our details as soon as possible.

I do have a couple of pictures which were forwarded, and they are attached.
They were taken before the most recent storm.

Two club members have generously volunteered their rigs and time to go get
these horses, and several others have offered to go along to ride shotgun.
Retrieving them is our biggest problem right now. They are 1500 miles away,
and it is still the dead of winter.

Their health and state of pregnancy must be evaluated first, but we would
like to get them 'home' as soon as possible. If you have any suggestions
for transportation, even for part of the distance, or places to stop briefly
and rest along the way, we would be most appreciative. I am hoping that
Chances has some connections out that way who could maybe bring them at
least part way east.

Here comes the part where I ask you for money -- again. We will have an
ongoing need for all the financial help we can get for this project. You
can help simply by joining the Northeast Miniature Horse Club, if you are
not already a member, and by renewing your membership, perhaps at a higher
level, if you are a 2007 member. You can volunteer your time and expertise
at our upcoming clinic and at our horse shows, where we always need help.
Every penny we save on paid employees at these events, is a penny that goes
toward our rescue work. You can sponsor a class or a championship at one of
the shows. Again, any savings for the club will go directly to rescue.

The following is from an email I received from Kristin Chambers, the Chances
rep who bid on the horses for us and will be bringing them to her rescue
facility in Kansas. It pretty much sums up the auction day:
"I am so tired, and short of natural childbirth, I can't recall anything so
painful as what I experienced today. There are things I wish I could wipe
from my memory. I am trying to hard to focus on the ones who are safe and
should have good healthy lives ahead of them. Bless the ones who loaded on
the killer trucks--not so lucky as these."

Keep this in mind......we did make a difference.

I promise to keep you updated as I have more information. And again, I
commend you for your support of this project and your support of our
organization. Ten little lives have you to thank.

Take care -

Cindy

Horses starved in Fort Hall

Posted by: "Aimee johnson" sayonara77baby@yahoo.com   sayonara77baby

The owners name is Shane Haggard.
Here's more info on the jerk. His wife's name is Susie. Related to Weeks, Stavros, and Halls. Phone # is 208-238-0740. Just in case you wanted to know, I am a little snoopy today :)
Free hay sought for horses

Authorities are asking the public to donate hay to help feed more than a
dozen starving horses and other farm animals found Friday on a rural
property near the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.

Mike Sanders, a captain with the Bannock County Sheriff's Office which
responded to the scene after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen, said
area ranchers, veterinarians and animal cruelty investigators with the
group, PAWS, are assisting with the effort to keep the suffering animals
alive.

''The case itself we're still investigating,'' Sanders said. ''We're not
sure of all the issues and facts surrounding this incident. What we're
trying to do is save the animals that are still out there.''
Friday, Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said deputies had found about 34 dead or
starving animals on the property. Sanders said by Saturday at least half of
the animals were dead, including two horses euthanized by a veterinarian who
responded to the scene with the deputies.

Nielsen said it is likely the worst case of animal neglect in the county
during the past decade. The animals' owner, Shane Haggard, has not been
charged with a crime.
Nielsen said some of the carcasses will be tested to confirm the cause of
death because Haggard maintains the animals are diseased.

Because Idaho has no felony animal cruelty statute, the worst penalty
Haggard could face if authorities determine wrongdoing is a misdemeanor
cruelty to animals.
Authorities, including the county prosecutors, will meet Monday to discuss
the case.

Sanders said it is beyond Haggard's capacity to feed the suffering animals.
