"LEWISTOWN -- Dickson Mounds Museum will host the annual Artifact Identification Day
on Sunday, Feb. 24 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Museum archaeologists and other experts will identify Native American artifacts and other
objects.
This year one member of the staff will provide "express" service for persons with less than
20 objects.
Additional activities include demonstrations of making stone tools and a special
presentation about artifacts with human faces.
Visitors are encouraged to bring artifacts, rocks, minerals, fossils, bones, and other
curiosities.
Joining museum archaeologists will be geologists John Washburn of the Lincoln Orbit
Earth Science Society and Steve Holley from Farmington, Illinois.
As they have for many years, Clark Iseminger and Ted Frank will be on hand to
demonstrate flint knapping, the ancient technique of shaping chert/flint.
At 3 p.m., William Iseminger, an archaeologist and site interpreter at Cahokia Mounds
State Historic site for more than 25 years, will offer a keynote address titled "Ancient
Faces of Eastern North America" in which he will explore Native American artifacts, some
as much as 10,000 years old, with human faces and forms.
Some of the effigies portray "everyday" people, while others feature ritual regalia such as
masks, capes, and tattoos. The hour-long presentation will be in the museum's
auditorium.
During the day, visitors will have the opportunity to examine two special collections of
Native American artifacts. The Glasscock Farm collection is from the Joliet area, and the
Epkins collection from the Pekin/Tremont area.
The Illinois State Museum - Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off
Illinois Routes 78 and 97.
