All- Thanks for the Info. Although all acids must be treated with respect I feel a little bit more at ease with a Pool Acid- Muriatic Acid. And since it has the propensity to also clean copper (especially copper coins) I believe I can put this in my list of items that really work.

Sulphuric acid is readily and very inexpensively obtainable at any well-stocked auto parts store - it's sold as "battery acid" and a quart or so is only a couple dollars. I'm unsure of the molarity, but it's not particularly dilute, so handle with care, it'll eat the clothes right off you - and presumably the skin under them a well - goggles and gloves would be a minimum for safe handling.
